ROWAN — Oak

Rowan was turned from a piece of oak that came from a friend's garden. The tree had fallen during the winter, and when I placed the blank on the lathe, it was still full of moisture.
As expected, the bowl continued to move and change shape as it dried. The wood warped, twisted, and settled into its final form — a process I always find fascinating. It is one of the reasons I love working with freshly cut wood. No matter how carefully I plan, the material always has the final say.
This piece is far from perfect, and that's exactly why I love it. Several knots mark the places where branches once grew from the trunk. These areas have a different density than the surrounding wood, and as the bowl dries, they influence the movement of the entire piece. This is where the magic happens. The wood reveals its character and creates a shape that could never be designed or forced.
I decided to leave the rim exactly as it came from the chainsaw, preserving the original cuts and traces of the tree's previous life. Raw, untamed, and full of character — a fitting description of Rowan herself.

Rowan vznikla z kusu dubu, který pochází ze zahrady mého kamaráda. Strom spadl během zimy a když jsem špalek upnul na soustruh, byl stále plný vody.
Jak se dalo očekávat, mísa se během schnutí dál měnila a tvarovala a praskala. Dřevo se kroutilo, pracovalo a postupně si našlo svůj vlastní výsledný tvar – proces, který mě nepřestává fascinovat. Je to jeden z důvodů, proč tak rád pracuji s čerstvě pokáceným dřevem. Ať už mám jakýkoli plán, poslední slovo má vždy materiál.
Tento kus má daleko k dokonalosti, a právě proto ho mám tak rád. Několik suků připomíná místa, kde z kmene kdysi vyrůstaly větve. Právě v těchto místech má dřevo jinou hustotu než ve zbytku kmene, a během schnutí tak ovlivňuje pohyb celého objektu. Tady se děje ta pravá magie. Dřevo odhaluje svůj charakter a vytváří tvar, který by nebylo možné navrhnout ani vynutit.
Rozhodl jsem se ponechat okraj přesně tak, jak vyšel zpod motorové pily. Zůstaly na něm původní řezy i stopy předchozího života stromu. Syrová, nespoutaná a plná charakteru – přesně taková je Rowan.
